Spring Replacement

The torsion spring on the shaft above the door does the lifting. The opener only guides the door up and down.

When a spring breaks you usually hear a bang from the garage. After that the door lifts a few inches and stops, or the opener strains and quits. Older and lighter doors use extension springs that run along the horizontal tracks instead.

Opener Repair and Installation

An opener that hums without moving the door, stops partway or reverses for no reason usually has one of three problems: a stripped drive gear, a safety sensor knocked out of line, or a logic board damaged by a power surge.

Many openers are worth repairing. One that has burned, or whose parts are no longer made, is not. The technician tells you which one you have before any work starts.

New Door Installation

A new door makes sense when sections are dented past repair, the bottom has rotted, or the door can no longer be balanced.

The new door gets new tracks and springs sized to its weight, so it runs as a matched set instead of new panels on worn hardware.

Can I replace a broken torsion spring myself?

We advise against it. A wound torsion spring holds enough tension to lift the whole door, and that tension comes out through the winding cone and the bars used to turn it. Unwinding one without proper winding bars and a clamp on the shaft is how people get hurt. If a spring has snapped, leave the door closed and call.

My door starts to close, then goes back up. Is the opener dead?

If the door starts down and reverses a foot off the floor, that's almost always the safety sensors, not a dead opener.
